Not sure if the Ebay ones are CD rank, I thought they were wider. I think the one shown here could be a wound stripe, it is similar to ones I have on khaki, WW2 ones are shorter than WW1

They do look similar but the CD stripes are usually yellow, this one is gold. As lee said, it looks very much like the army wound stripes i have seen.
I know that they were worn by the navy but i have never seen one.

Hi Fez,

I have an example also, have had it for many yrs, as I recall came with the rating's medals.

Its in fine enbroidered gold wire, same stitching down the centre as yours,
1 & 9/16th in length

the original spec. was for double gold Russia braid, from memory. Which the example looks to be. The RND would have been issued the army version to wear on drab.

I recall reading somewhere (& likely yrs ago) that the Russian braid was the very fine wire embroidery as these two wound insignia appear to be embroidered.

Royal Navy Wound stripes are 2" long for WWI (Instituted 1916) and 1 1/2" long for WWII (Instituted 1943).

They should be of Gold Russia Braid (No1) which I believe is slightly less than 1/8" in width. For a clear illustration of exactly what Russia braid looks like see the Hand and Locke website at

The only exception to this was that personnel wounded in WWI were also allowed to wear a single red wound stripe during WWII of the 1 1/2" size

The problem with looking for genuine wound stripes of either war is that they were not officially supplied as made up badges but as separate strips of braid which the individual had to have attached to the cuff as per the regulations.
Unless therefore you have a uniform, or scrap of uniform with good provenance, it is impossible to identify a 'Wound stripe' from just any piece of Gold Russia Braid No1.

I am happy that mine is a naval wound stripe, it is the correct brade on naval serge. And it came in a job lot of very cheap bits :-D

I have an image dating from the Great War of a Leading Hand with two Good Conduct stripes and two Wound Stripes, if that's any good?
