Royal Signals WO1 Bandmaster wearing "Jimmy" collar badges with a crown?

Attachment 169923Dear Friends.

I wonder if any member of the Forum could now advise me if the Dress Regulations regarding the wearing of Bullion/Wire Woven collar badges when wearing the Red Tunic for the Royal Signals Band has changed.

My reason for asking is based on the attached photo of the Bandmaster of the Corps Band when on duty at an engagement in Bristol I think last year 2016 quite clearly wearing collar badges on an all gold collar with both badges have Queens Crowns above "Jimmy". I have never seen this configuration before. Even the gold braid collar is new to me.

I have always been of the opinion that both the Bandsmen, Director Of Music and the Bandmaster all wore just the "Jimmy" on a blue collar with gold piping and definitely no crown.

I have also attached four random photos of both Directors of Music and Bandmasters over the years and I have listed them as they appear left to right. None of them have the "Jimmy" with a crown or a gold coloured collar.

1. Capt. David Barringer Director of Music Royal Signals Jul 2009.
2. Capt. Shane O'Neill Director of Music Royal Signals Jul 2015
3. WO1 Colin Hales Bandmaster Royal Signals Band Jul 2008
4. WO1 Estelle Gouws Bandmaster Royal Signals Jul 2013

Any information would be most gratefully received.

Kind regards

Sorry Dear Friends.

I seem to have transposed the names on the list of numbers three and four. They should be the other way around. Sorry.

Attached are the only Royal Signals style Officer's collars that I am aware of.

Please advise if there are more.

Many thanks

Dated 3 Nov 16 with the correct ones being worn. I suspect the first photo shows an unfortunate tailor's error as Dress Regs have not been changed. The band are now CAMUS badged, have moved from Blandford to Cosford and only wear Corps uniforms and insignia in parade dress and mess kit.

White Bandmasters collar badges

Dear Friends.

Further to my Thread of the 4th May 2017 headed Bandmaster's Collar Badges with a Crown.

I feel I am now in a position to answer my own question.

It transpires there was a Royal Signals Corps Memo No 22 of 1978 which reads as follows. "Royal Corps of Signals Band. Revival of Full Dress Bandmaster's Embroidered collars " of a pattern introduced in the 1980's.

This pattern included the wearing of Embroidered Collar Badges complete with a St. Edwards Crown.

I have recently been most fortunate with my grateful thanks to my very good friend and member of the Forum Colin Hodgkins who owns the badges shown below to have found out who and when the Bandmaster at the top of this Thread is and when the photo of him was taken wearing the White Backed Collar Badges.

It transpires that the Bandmaster at the time was WO1 Paul Wilman. He became the Corps Bandmaster in 2002. The attached photo of him was taken in London in 2002 or 2003. He is quite clearly wearing the White Backed Collar Badges in question.

Just for a little further information Bandmaster Wilman went on to become the Director of Music of the Life Guards and was Director of Music of the Queens Birthday Parade in 2013. He retired in 2015 with the rank of Major.

I have taken the opportunity of adding the original WO1 Bandmaster photo
of Paul Wilman.

A set of the White Backed Embroidered Collar badges owned by Colin Hodgkins.

And lastly a photo of the then Major Paul Wilman taken at the Queens Birthday Parade in 2013 where he was the parade Director of Music and is on horseback.

I hope this little update has been of some interest to members of the Forum.

With my best wishes

Thanks for showing that Chris, very interesting indeed. A nice pair of badges, now we will all be looking for a pair.
