Black Scottish? formation sign.
 

I am struggling to identify this black patch worn on a Royal Artillery B.D. There may be an India - Burma connection.

A representation of the 18th Division sign?
A "make do" to represent a Government Tartan cut out of the Black Watch badge?

Never seen anything like it. Appears to be a piece of oil cloth cut in the shape of the Royal Scots cap badge. ???

Perhaps just the backing cloth remaining and the tartan has frayed and come away or been destroyed by moths!

I was told by the owner that there was a possible Black Watch connection but I didn't mention it earlier as I didn't want to influence your replies.

Why would a Royal Artillery Officer be wearing a Black Watch patch?

If there is cloth missing what colour/design should it be?

Oh, very droll. It is obviously a very rare, non-reflective, Special Forces recognition sign used by undercover agents posing as Royal Highland Ack Ack gunners. J.D.R. will have several on his website soon at very affordable prices.

The Tyneside Scottish were reformed in 1947 as 670 LAA Regt (Tyneside Scottish), The Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment.

That wonderful publication, Badges on Battledress by one Jon Mills says the Black Watch flash was worn by 670 LAA Regt RA from 1954. Retained as S Battery 439 LAA Regt after 1955. The example illustrated is a tartan patch however (5338, page 1073).
