Unknown buttons

The first photograph shows three very small buttons used for securing chin straps to peaked caps. The double Xs would suggest the 20th of something.

The second appears to show Zeus hurling a bolt of lightning. It is British made.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The XX buttons are Lancashire Fusilier ones, the others are GPO cable laying service (I'll have to check the correct title).

Edit - more accurate information here:

"These were worn throughout MN by officers, warrant and petty officers in WT trades. In the absence of trade badges these were a way of indicating your skills as you moved round your employer's fleet or changed ship and line. Of course they were also backed up by your papers. They were also worn as a button hole badge by leading and ABs, or whatever the line called them, if they were RT/WT trained/qualified."

Many thanks, The Lancashire Fusiliers being the old 20th Foot makes perfect sense. I did originally check Howard Ripley's Buttons of the British Army and saw that the Lancashire Fusiliers' mess dress button depicts a sphinx inside a wreath. I wrongly assumed that the button used on the peaked cap would be similar.

I saw this on the Army Rumour Service website and somehow it didn't quite stack up.

Well he has no business hurling lightning bolts, his job is to scythe down those nearing the end of their allotted time on earth. Are the comrades in the Thunderbolt and Lightning and Affiliated Rain Workers Union aware of this breach of agreed trade demarcation rules?

Looks like the eBay description may have been correct.

"GPO Telegraph Dept? - Monarch Steamship Co? Officers Button. 16mm (5/8")."

I remembered seeing a thread or threads on the Father Time with his broken egg timer insignia on the forum a few years ago - by coincidence I'd scanned The Formation Sign item mentioned in the link when I was rummaging through a stack of them last night, just couldn't remember the proper words, like.

" The central device depicting an hour glass in the hands of Old Father Time being shattered by an electrical discharge to symbolise the speed of the new communications"

Early example of 'product placement' , it wasn't an hour glass in his hand , it was a bottle of White Lightning ! :D

The article Postwarden refers (in the link) in The Formation Sign indicates that Monarch was one of the HM Telegraph ships, along with HMTS Alert, Ariel, and Iris.

I don't know - granted, although a not unknown sight outside a Peterborough nightclub at closing time in the early hours of a weekend morning, is sharp bladed weaponry and a broken cider bottle being wielded by a naked man really going to increase sales?
