Unknown sailor cap & attributes

Hi,

Someone on a forum asks for id of this cap, and likely time period.
While there is obviously a similar cap basis as for the RN & Commonwealth navies, the front attributes don’t ring a bell to me, for an active service branch at least (nor for seacadets, or reserve ones).

Unless I am wrong, in which case feel free to correct me, I would at first glance see here a personnal post-service period initiative, from an ex-sailor. Post ww2 period.

Crown looks a bit like merchant navy one, but don’t understand then why a sub drawn inside...

Your thoughts are welcome.

Thanks & Best Regards,

JD

Just a very wild guess, but could it be Fleet Auxiliary or Merchant Marine which was armed and they sunk a sub????

Hi Terry,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this five legged sheep.

Based on crown’s type, there could a link with merchant navy, I agree.

I checked what ship sunk u168, but she was sunk by HrMs Zwaardvisch in October 44, not a merchant ship.

Maybe a part of the enigma might be withdrawn by dating the likely period of this cap: it obviously has a white plastic support ring (made visible thanks to moths’ holes) and two colours of ink (black & green) used inside. Green written inscriptions looks like written with a ‘Bic’ like multicolor pencil. Just a feeling, but for these two reasons, despite some time was given to moths to have a significant lunch, I would estimate this cap as dating from a post ww2 period. Just a guess though.

JD
