5th boss badge but what unit ?????

A Forum member has told be about the badge in the attached photo that was sold on E bay about 3 months ago. It was being sold as a 5th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers item but the description rang a bell with me.

It appears to tie in with the description of a boss badge that was mentioned but not illustrated in the article on boss badges by Irvin Mortensen in Crown Imperial in June 1980 under the descrition "The Kings Own ( 5th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers-Liverpool Rifle Brigade )"

The description should have said "The Kings" and not "The Kings Own " and despite the badge in the article mentioning a crimson boss, it appears the boss badge on E bay may well have been the same as the badge dfescibed in the article and therefore quite possibly an item to the 5th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers.

It is a long shot but if anyone on the Forum bought the badge or knows who did, I would, it they were prepared to sell on, be happy to give them a good profit on the purchase price.

I would be equally happy if anyone could confirm which county/regiment the badge belongs to.

Thanks

P.B.

Peter,

I know this is photographed in George & Roys's book but I remember talking about it with George and I dont believe he was totally convinced.

I am not saying it wasnt worn by others but it was definately worn by the 5th (Ardwick) VB The Manchester Regiment.

Thanks Simon,

I also discussed it with George and mentioned the item in the Crown Imperial article and I was also not sure that the attribution in the article was correct.

I can see that it was worn by the 5th (Ardwick ) V.B. but as you say, there is a possibility that it might have been worn by other units.

It does seem to be a rather "general purpose badge", cheaper to acquire by "5's" than having their own unique design.
