Cap Badge help??
 

Hi,
My uncle served in WW1, but we can find no records of his service.
My father insists that he was in the Wiltshire regiment, but a cousin thinks the London reiment.
I have two photos of him in uniform.
Can anybody look at these two photos and give any clue, please??? Unfortunately the badges themselves are not in focus :(

First photo, appear to be Royal Engineers cap and collar badges, second photo looks like Wiltshire Regiment.

In the second photo hes wearing a bandoleer and boots with spurs which suggests either cavalry or a mounted unit. Sorry I cant comment on the cap badges.

I would agree RE and the Wiltshire Regt.

The photos look to be post WW1 and date from the inter war period.

The 1st picture shows a well tailored uniform that looks between the wars. Badge does look Royal Engineers-grenades on collar? No WWI medal ribbons. Are we sure this is the same man as the second picture, which looks earlier to me. Regards, Paul.

The Wiltshire Regt man would've qualified for WWI medals, he's wearing two overseas service chevrons.

Failed to notice that. So a wartime or soon after picture. Sure it has been posted when they stopped being worn. Although an earlier belt is worn I think the 1st picture is a different man with a swagger stick ready to 'walk out' between the wars. Regards, Paul. Further- quick search- second picture should 1918-1922 period- probably 1918 as no medal ribbons showing.

Wound stripes were no longer authorised to be worn after 1922 I think, overseas chevrons the same?
I hadn't spotted that Wiltshire Regt is dressed for mounted duties, I'd noted the bandolier but not that he's wearing puttees wound top to bottom and spurs.

I think it should be remembered that infantry units would have had a good number of horses with drivers etc not just cavalry and mounted units.

I’ve just realised that I’ve posted photos of two different men!! What a dope. The one I’m looking for help with is the one with the stick under his arm!( The other is a different uncle and you’re all right it was between the two wars.)
Albert joined up towards the end of WW1. He was born in 1898. My dad, his youngest brother, thinks that he was a blacksmith, and that was what he did after the war ended.

Lol, I hadn't mentioned his surname. I do a lot of family tree research and I have what must be just about the most awful combination of names to search for - Smith and Jones!
