A crook and bankrupt whose sharp practice got a special mention in the notes on fakes by Laurie Archer I think.

Hi Alan,
Yes, luckily for me before my time as serious collector so never purchased from them.

Notorious back in the day.
By coincidence I was rearranging book shelves today and came across this little pamphlet, from the '70's I think.

What a super thread that is, bad news certainly spread rather faster than good, even back in those days

Was he ever charged or convicted?

It is interesting that a number of people who were interested enough in, and knowledgeable about, badges to write books on them also turned to the dark side and produced, had produced, or simply sold, fakes.

That's three whose names have appeared on the forum over the last few years, all who have the letter 'r' as the last letter of their surname.

Once bought a 5th Lancs RVC helmet plate off him, when it arrived it was genuine but missing the top scroll and crown which zi am sure he knew but didn’t mention in the description.
One dealer who had I had some great items from had a similar name, I think it was John Venner ( May be wrong) but his address was Happy Hillock Walk.

It’s rather spooky when I think how long ago I am talking about, around 50 years ago.

Peter I used to deal with John Venner also and like you had some nice items -not sure and stand to be corrected but I think his full time job was a post man???

You are not thinking of John Hankin, 84 The Green, Morden, Surrey, are you?

Dave.

No I dealt with him as well.
