29 COMMANDO REGT CLOTH TITLE?
 

As I was sorting through some miscellaneous badges, I cam across this cloth Commando title. Just as I was about to throw it in my fakes/repro drawer I vaguely remember being told some years ago when I got it that it was being worn unofficially by 29 Commando Regt Royal Artillery.
That it wasn't a fake war time badge but a modern cloth title.
Is this true?
Is this what led to official ARMY/COMMANDO cloth titles being issued?

An interesting theory as this manufacture is not easy to date with any certainty - It would be good to learn more, see a photograph, or turn up any other evidence

29 Regt didn't become a commando regiment until 1962 at which time they would have been wearing Number 2 dress, although I believe the guards wore shoulder titles with number 2s I wasn't aware of any other units doing so. I could of course be wrong ......again.

Thanks for that and of course you're right but I'm thinking in the last 20 years and on wooly pulleys like RM Commandos, I'll go through my records and see what I come up with but we could really do with an expert on RA dress distinctions

As I believe I reported some time ago the attempt by the-then 29 Cdo Lt Regt RA in late 1963/early 1964 to get a two line title (matching the RM Cdo title) reading ROYAL ARTILLERY/COMMANDO was overtaken by events (the introduction of No 2 Dress). So it was never authorised, never made and never worn. A pity in my opinion since it would have looked better than the generic ARMY COMMANDO title. Mike

In March 2005 29 Commando Regt RA were reportedly wearing unauthorised 'ARMY COMMANDO' embroidered titles on their jerseys. I have no details of their colour or format.

Could be, right colour but doesn't explain why it's listed in Army Organisational Insignia manual held by the MOD

yes the wonders of MOD ! but I remember these in RN Clothing stores and appearing in RN RM stores publications

Of course Marc you're absolutely right, but other than MOD Police and Defence Fire Service badges and I think VR/T metal title there are no RAF or Navy badges listed.
