602nd City of Glasgow Squadron.

While I do not buy on impulse too often this badge popped up online a month or so ago. I knew the seller and the collection it had come from but none the less felt it was likely a fantasy piece. It was an odd ball so I bought it.

The 602nd transitioned from Bomber to Fighters in 1938 or 1939 I believe

A cast badge with lugs (1 missing) it measure 50mm x 50mm at its largest points. Fantasy, Association or what? all input welcome.

Badge looks good to me, as far as i am aware the badge was only issued as cast due to the very limited numbers. I had an opportunity to buy both 602 and 603 squadron badges many years ago but passed on the items as they were cast and i thought them dubious. In hindsight i am kicking myself as i could have purchased them for peanuts!!! You live and learn. Nice badge by the way, i am envious!!!!
Cheers, Dave

Forgot to mention, this badge is in Bloomers as a pipers cap badge/ sporran badge worn post 1957 by the bomber squadron. The 603 sqn badge which is very similar was worn according to Bloomer 1933-57 when it was disbanded.

Hello Dave, thank you for that information. Would never had thought of a Sporran badge.

Did the unit revert back to a Bomber Squadron post war WW2. As their history notes fighter squadron duty during the war. Or was it a traditions type badge harking back to their earliest formation when they were a Bomb Squadron.

I've always seen these referred to as musician badges, usually pouch or crossbelt badges with both the 602 and 603 worn prewar.

I have both in sandcast form although I have seen better examples. The two usually retail with most dealers at around the £175.00 mark each.

Thanks SAS1 for that information.

602 Squadron Pipe Band

If you take a look at the 602 Squadron Museum's website there are a few photos (albeit not that sharp) showing the badges being worn on the Sporran and Tam o' Shanter (cap)

Thanks, Insignia for that link to the 602nd museum, it does appear these badges are being worn on the head gear.

Note - RAF Sqadrons are just a number not 602nd or 603rd etc as in the USAF!

602 (City of Glasgow) is still a active reserve sqn (Flight Operations)

603 (City of Edinbough) was re-activated in 1999 as a RAF(P) unit

Hello Michael,

The "other badge" shown in your attached photos is a Plaid Brooch worn towards the shoulder. Very nice indeed.

I knew I had seen a photo of these badges on display somewhere, there's a Pipers uniform of 603 Squadron on display in Edinburgh Castle
