Lee Metford Bayonet

Hi there this is my first attempt at posting a question to the members. I am a Canadian who has been handed down through my family this bayonet and was wondering if any one could supply me with the correct information regarding this. I have discovered that it is Lee Metford 1 type 2 and has an X for the bend test and was manufactured in 1893, but all the other markings are a mystery to me especially the name M. Lein 264 SR. My great great uncle was a soldier in the Boer War so was curious to see if this belonged to someone involved in that confict. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanking you in advance David S.

Hello David, welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts. Hopefully you will get the information you are seeking.
One note, this Forum is focused on insignia. Perhaps you should look for a bayonet page on the internet and post there as well.

I should think it has been issued in its service to The Leinster Regiment and The Scottish Rifles. Regards, Paul.

I have a January 1900 Lee Metford bayonet and am very interested in this thread. We have kicked it around before and you will find some useful information if you type 'Lee Metford bayonet' into the search engine on this forum.

Best wishes

John

Thanks to both War dog and John G for the info, I will try to gather more information from your suggestions, also do you think that M. Lein could have been a member of Leister Regiment and is this regiment still in existence?

I would very much doubt it is a name. I think the M may relate to the 3rd Battalion The Leinster Regiment being Militia. Regiment ceased to exist in 1922. You will find information on both regiments with a google/wiki search. Regards, Paul. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince...oyal_Canadians) I'll let you search for the Scottish Rifles which is the title 2nd Cameronians used.

Thanks again Paul, I look forward to trying to unlock the mystery of this bayonet.

Hi,

The bayonet belongs to the 3rd Battalion, Leinster Regiment, it dates post 1908 when the battalion was designated as a Special Reserve, hence the "SR" on the blade.

Regards,

Stephen

Thank you very much Stephen, the information is very much appreciated.

Thanks Stephen. I was wondering why if issued at different times to different regiments one had not been scored across- looks like I was mistaken about the Scottish Rifles. Regards, Paul.
