I have acquired a button which I think is military but have no idea, it was found in a box of buttons left by an old lady who has since died. I wondered of anyone can identify it for me please.

Hello Sanny1, welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts.

I think it's a generic Rifle Volunteer button, as for cleaning, I'd leave it as is.

First, Welcome to the forum. Not a very clear photo but looks like Victorian. As Rob says, a”Rifle” Regt. But I would say Regular rather than Volunteer Regt. (As it appears to be Brass). If there is a maker’s mark on the rear, It could help you in finding decade in which it was made or issued. (I suspect mid 1880s.). If it is well worn, I would see no further harm in cleaning it. You could try a mild Silver cleaning agent with a soft tooth brush. If it IS silver plated, you could try a silver cleaning liquid and follow the instructions! Good luck and I hope you receive more answers on your questions. Regards, D.J.

Further to my post above Sanny1, If you post all that is on the rear of your button, printing, logos design etc. Other members may shoot back a quick answer in greater depth than I did. Regards, D.J.
