Auction Frame of SA volunteer badges
Not my particular field - but this looks nice - would any of the SA collectors like to comment on its authenticity and value? Opening bid is around £550 I think.

They are the real deal.
Worth more than the estimate . regards |
Very nice lot, Thanks for the link.
I am wondering what the CR within bugle horn badge is for. Cheers, John |
S.A. Badges
As to whether these badges that are framed have the loops/sliders is not mentioned in the description. Unfortunately many framed lots of badges that were collected in the early part of the last century had the fixings removed, fine if left intact in the frame.

Interesting to see a silver Royal Artillery badge there with the crown removed - did Transvaal Horse Artillery Volunteers wear this.
Also my large grenade collar badges with THAV and THA in the scroll below are brass. I've always wondered why they weren't silver/white metal. Nice collection though. Keith |
They should make the top end estimate with ease and would certainly be worth it.

Definitely an E for 'Eastern Rifles'. There was no C Rifles regiment in the Transvaal Volunteer system.
As for brass badges, my thoughts is that the Transvaal Volunteers badges were all in white metal (or silver for officers) with a few exceptions among the infantry units who also had blackened brass badges. The brass badges that are around I believe may be 1960s-1970s re-strikes from original dies. |
No, they did not wear the Royal Artillery cap badge, they wore their own distinctive gun pattern cap badges.

I think that without seeing it you would want a condition report, the actual frame does appear to be old, certainly on the face of it, some nice and scarce badges and a good representative collection of the Transvaal Volunteer force, although incomplete.
