Help to identify badges

Hi

I wonder if you could confirm the identity of the two patches shown below. The Crossed Swords and Boomerang I believe to be the formation patch of the Ist Infantry Brigade Group and dating to the 1950s/60s. The second badge with the black swan I believe to be something to do with Western Australia but I don't know what or when it was used.

I'm afraid I don't know much about Australian Army insignia (I'm a Royal Navy collector) but I have purchased them for my friend. He is an Australian who has lived in the UK since the late-1970s. He was an officer in the Australian Army and served as a Captain in Vietnam. He has collected Australian Army insignia for about 10 years. Now in his mid-80s his declining health prevents him from getting to militaria fairs anymore. Following a recent fall downstairs he is now housebound. So I buy any Australian military insignia I come across for him - which isn't a lot in the UK!

I'm sure both the badges shown are very common and easily identifiable but I just can't find any decent source material to help identify them here. So any help would be appreciated. Thank-you.

Pete

Hi Pete,

Correct on both accounts, the first badge is of 1st Independent Infantry Brigade Group, and the second is Western Command, the 'dying duck' in the words of those who wore it.

About the only cloth badge reference book to Australian material at the moment is Australian Army Badges, Cloth Insignia of the Army in Australia, 1860-1993, by J K Cossum, 1997. It is not in colour unfortunately.

Help to identify badges

Hi Keith

Many thanks for the identification and for suggesting a suitable reference book. I'll see if I can track down a copy - it will certainly help me identify what I find for him and hopefully avoid getting any duplicates!

Thanks again

Pete

Hi Pete

There are 5 Cossum books and they are all out of print and hard to get and are expensive if you do find one.

I have the first 4 but not the one with the cloth patches in it, No 5 in the series.

Maybe do an Aussie ABE Books search and see how you go.

Regards

Phil.

Thanks Phil

Appreciate the advice! I'll check Aussie ABE books and see what I can find. I think volume 5 would be the most useful for me but it sounds as if it will be hard to get! But I'll keep looking - at least I know now what I'm looking for!

Thanks again

Pete
