Is this a over seas chevron ?
 

Hi all
had a mate send me this today was stripped of a totally destroyed tunic the only 2 pieces salvageable , could this be a home made chevron and worn upside down ??
Any thoughts would be appreciated :confused:

What nationality do you think they are, they have a French or Italian feel to them grey backing material is odd,

I was told they came off together from an Australian tunic the colour patch is 14th Bn I have no doubt that what I was told is correct as no money changed hands this was a favor .

I've only ever seen the standard style of service chevron with only minor variations due to the number of different manufacturers.

If they are WWI then they don't comply with the standard design, however if correct show a red chevron signifying 1914 service (4 Aug-31 Dec 14) and 3 blue chevrons signifying qualifying overseas service to sometime in 1917 (1 Jan-31 Dec 17).

The strange thing is that the service chevron wasn't authorised for use until 1918, so these would have been made for retrospective service, unusual but not impossible.

one comment I can make re the gray color backing and it being Australian. I have read in a uniform book that Australian khaki uniforms worn in the middle East in WWI would fade from khaki to a gray shade after a while. Don't know if this helps or not.
