Perhaps I should become an enterprising seller :D , someone is offering 4 'provenance metal' pins :
1. Flanders Fields
2. Somme 100
3. Passchendaele 100
4. Battle of Britain 75th anniversary (4th in set is actually Centenary 'Thank You')

And they are only asking for £799.00 !

I bought all of mine directly from RBL and would never sell them for profit

Frank Kelley 12-06-19 12:48 PM

I would just be interested to know where those D Day lapel poppies were actually made, it is rather strange that there is absolutely nothing whatsoever included that gives the answer, all the more so, given the lack of publicity when compared to the Somme poppies and the other similar.

At the moment there are 6 different sellers with the cheapest being £5.00 , another at £20.00 and 3 taking 'bids'. Only 1 of the sellers (bids up to £8.50) has stated that 100% profits going to RBL , all the others do not mention the charity at all !

I pointed out the ridiculous prices being asked to the RBL , I also questioned where the D-Day 75 lapel pins were made . Their response was ;

"Thanks for bringing this to our attention, i will forward this over to poppy appeal."

I won't hold my breath waiting for a reply.

RBL say they were made in the UK but no specific details.

I think I will believe them, I certainly would like to, well, I did subsequently buy one, after watching last weeks very moving events in Portsmouth and in Normandy and I am really pleased with it, a most handsome and nicely made little poppy.

Lucky find

Saw a large joblot of mainly charity pins and partially hidden in the middle of them was ...........a 2006 poppy pin.

There were no bids yet and there was "make an offer" , so offer /counter offer/accepted/deal done. Got the lot for £20.00 :D

Next day the seller sent a message , another buyer who had just missed out had sent him multiple messages wanting him to ask if I would consider selling the poppy as he wanted it for his "son's collection".;)

Seller told me he checked out the other buyer and he was a badge dealer !

Now all I need to do is find 2007 and 2008 pins. :(

"RBL-ROI are delighted to introduce a new pin commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the start of WW2 and particularly acknowledging the contribution of Irish men and women in that conflict."

" Available online for suggested donation €3 each + €2 IE & NI p&p (for up to 10), €3 rest of world."

These can be ordered via a PayPal link on their Facebook page , be sure to state Code 'WW2' and how many you want.

Spotted a British Legion 15 year award brooch (was simply listed as 'poppy brooch') and thought it could replace the one I already have.

Wasn't really paying attention to detail but when it arrived today I discovered it is a different version , double poppy flower.

Nice addition to my set. :)

10 o'clock or 11 o'clock ?

Rearranging pins to fit 2006 in I spotted something I hadn't noticed before.

I define 10 o'clock as having leaf starting at join of poppy petals (low leaf) and 11 o'clock as having leaf midway up top petal (high leaf).

Undated pins
Small - 10 and 11
Medium - 10 and 11

Dated pins
2011 - 11 o'clock only
2012 - 10 and 11
2013 - 10 and 11
Centenary double dated - 10 only
2019 - 10 only

The Poppy Shop website currently has small and medium pins with 11 o'clock leaf and as was pointed out earlier in this thread the 2011 pin was only available from Poppy Shop , so is it possible that at some point Poppy Shop was using a different supplier/manufacturer for items sold in the shops ?

Full Circle

Another 'browsing' find , a lot simply labeled "metal pin badges' comprising about 40 charity pins. In among them was ....... a 2008 poppy pin ! :)

Got the lot for £2.70 + £1.06 postage , so total cost £3.76 (less than Poppy Shop charge to post 1 pin).

They arrived today and when going through them I found a 2009 pin  , first thought was I need to wear my glasses before buying things but at the bottom of the package was the 2008 one. :D

So why full circle ?
Well , in January I posted that I was "Still looking for 2006 , 2007 and 2008" and now I have the full set ....plus spares from 2009-2018 including the elusive 2005(?) micro/stud (most were in joblots containing other badges I was after).

My next goal is to get the oval 'centenary' ones I'm missing. :(

Full set plus 'variations'

Now that I have finally got a complete set of poppies I have found out that I also have some that are do not appear in most 'standard' sets.

1. Stud/micro - First official pin issued circa 2005.

2. Mini (2 O'clock leaf) - Not official RBL but 'possibly' an early authorised item ?

3. Small undated - 2 O'clock , 10 O'clock and 11 O'clock leafs.

4. Medium undated - 10 O'clock and 11 O'clock leaf.

5 . 2012 - Standard dated 'split' poppy with 10 O'clock leaf .
...............Dated 'full' poppy with 10 O'clock leaf (full enamel , no metal 'splits').
...............Dated 'split' poppy with 11 O'clock leaf.

6. 2013 - Same 3 as 2012.

7. 2016 - Standard double dated poppy.
..............Standard double dated poppy , colour variation (quality control issue ?). These were definitely supplied to some RBL Poppy sellers.

Are these all genuine RBL poppies ?

The 2012 and 2013 'full' poppies were bought from local Poppy seller/stand , I have had them since they were issued (wasn't buying from eBay at that time). The following years 2014-2018 and the 2019 pins no longer have the 'split' poppy.

The 2012 and 2013 pins with 11 O'clock leaf (and 'split') are the same as the 2011 one and the small and medium undated pins currently on sale directly from Poppy Shop.

N.B - I also have a 'dodgy' set of eight dated pins !

.

Mike_2817 31-08-19 01:33 PM

Thanks to Mike V who pointed out a 'Buy It Now' 2008 Pin @ £20 (Postage Free) I also now have a complete set. Well done Mike for getting your at such a good price. I also think mine was a fair price as well, but would still pick up a spare at the right price.

I know I have surplus dated pins from 2010 onwards in the office plus 'Poppy Appeal' special sets and some undated examples which are returns from shops & poppy sellers after each poppy appeal, which I am now mounting examples onto a cork board for sale during this years appeal.

Mike, stand by for a e-mail re missing variation examples in my collection. I know I want a small stud poppy for a friends collection, and I have a 2018 'Overseas' Poppy example for you.
