West Kent Yeomanry
 

Hi Chaps
I have this badge to the West Kent Yeomanry, but the writing on the scroll is different to others that I have seen.
Can anyone confirm if this is a genuine or restrike badge please.

Genuine badge but a RWK one whose scroll has been removed.

Malc, Alan is correct. The answer lies in the mane and head angle. In the RWK and 20th London badge, the mane sweeps across the shoulder and the head angle is almost horizontal. On the WK Yeo and WK cyclists the mane is shorter and the heads are looking more of a 45% angle upwards. I have some pikkys for comparison.

Having heard various unsubstantiated theories on the Kent Cyclists v Kent Yeomanry badges here is some evidence as to which badge was worn by the Cyclists. The shoulder title is quite clear as to this being the Kent Cyclists.

This was not a long lived regt so I doubt there were many badges made so I would expect them all to be the same pattern

Nice picture. One version has the head at a much higher angle, the Yeomanry one pictured here on the right. The other one has is slightly flatter and has loops which is my interpretation of the West Kent Cyclists

I think it is Cox's book that makes a distinction. I would need to see a comparable photo of the West Kent Yeomanry before I would be sure. Perhaps some one has one?

I have Colin Chirchills books bit these are not pictured, It has been suggested that the bi metal one is the Kent cyclist battalion. Has anyone seen these on uniform or have similar ? , Kevin. The white metal one has been gilded at some stage but it has worn off the front.

Going through my box of odds and duff badges i found a West Kent Yeomanry which is chromed or nickle plated made by Firmin.
Was this badge produced like this, if so what date was it worn.

I don't think any badges were produced chromed but it seems it was a fashion especially post war to have your badge chrome plated. It seems to me to be more prevalent in armoured or yeomanry units although there is the chromed RAF and I also have a Duke of Wellington's Regiment .

the Firmin Mark and slider look rather modern, could this be a Kent Police badge?

I think this badge was (maybe still is) worn by a Cadet Organisation in Kent which is not affiliated to the ACF.

It's interesting that a marine cadet force unit has adopted an army (WKY) badge. Are there any other RN affiliated units that have adopted army county badges also?
