1953 Coronation Medal
 

Hi everyone. New to this forum. Went through a family member's basement recently and came across a bunch of military badges, medals, pictures...etc. Curious if anyone can provide context or background to the pictures attached. Seems to be labelled as a '1953 Coronation medal', but can't find much else about it online anywhere.

That is The Memorial (Silver) Cross, the gift of Canada first authorized in 1919, is issued as a memento of personal loss and sacrifice on the part of widows and mothers of Canadian sailors, aviators and soldiers who died for their country. The recipients, although not Veterans themselves, can wear the cross at any time.

Is it named on the rear?

The box is nothing to do with the Cross.

Not my field of collecting, but I believe this is a 1919 Canadian Memorial Cross ?

The medal on the right in your image is the Canadian Memorial Cross, initially presented to the mother and wife of a soldier who died due to circumstances of service. It should have a service members name and number on the reverse. That can be researched.

There is indeed an inscription on the back.

If the cross still has the deceased soldiers details on the reverse then the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site will prove well worth a visit.
Entering the details on the easy to use site will provide details of where he is buried or commemorated along with date of death etc

Out of interest, could you post the service number and name on the Mem Cross?
