Right - just found it - nice synopsis in BT White's BRITISH TANK MARKINGS AND NAMES. Although it does not mention badges, the Royal Naval Air Service Armoured Car Division was formed in 1914 to protect RNAS bases in Belgium and Northern France. In 1915 most of the RNAS armoured cars (along with several officers and ratings) were handed over to the Army, which reorganized them into Armoured Motor Batteries of the MGC. This led to the formation of the Heavy Branch, MGC, later (1917) named as the Tank Corps.
