RE cap badge in silver?

Interested in any comments re this full size RE cap badge in silver. No, it's NOT one of those "rare" silver badges that have plagued our hobby....;)

Faintly marked to the reverse is a mark for "V & S" (Vaughton & Son(s?) just visible but no h/m that I can see.

A little too big for a sweetheart badge, I would think but I defer to wiser people...

Sorry about the red line...not some novel attempt at copyright but our ancient monitor is showing signs of needing to be replaced.

Very interesting. I would say that it is a private purchase by a Officer for wear by his wife/lady friend possibly. The maker mark is unknown to me having not seen it before (or the badge) in all my years collecting Royal Engineer badges etc.

Markings on back of strap? If the badge is full size could it not be for the band around a Pith Helmet (Pagri?) lots of other novel ways for badges to be mounted to these.

Being of Silver would this be a Volunteer Rgt?

Thanks for your feedback. I will try to get a better photo of the mark but I only saw it by looking really closely.

The pin is unmarked but that is a good point as I have had badges where the silver pin has been marked.

Vaughton's did a lot of silver fobs for sports prize medals and also many of those tribute medals given to WW1 servicemen returning from the war.

Can't recall where it came from but I first thought it was plated but, no, it is silver.

Anyone else got an idea? :D

OK, it's probably really hard to see but there a faint V & S visible, as arrowed. The "S" is the most prominent and is to the left of the dot for the garter. Again, sorry for the red line. A new monitor has been ordered.:)
