No 38 British Army Lorry TAC sign

I am struggling to find out what the number 38 represents when used on what appears to be a R.E. Workshop Lorry. The photograph was possibly taken in North Africa or perhaps Italy.

Tricky one to tie down, 38 seemed to be used by the Royal Engineers in the Middle East quite a bit?

Many, many thanks. Where can I find a copy of Hodges's and Taylor's book, assuming that it is a book?

I have just found it on Abe books and blimey, it is expensive.

Unfortunately the lack of a visible formation sign precludes a positive identification. The Germans (as at Feb 44) listed 38 in white on cobalt blue as being a Corps level RE Survey Coy. Mike
