Hi, Could some of you more experienced cavalry men run the rule over these three 16 Lancers badges please. All comments are welcome. I have already purchased these but can return them if any discrepancies.
Thanks, Jim.

I think the the Victorian one is certainly a fake cast from original badge and I would be wary of the others if they came form the same stable.

1. There should be brasing holes on the Victorian one and the lugs are wrong.

2. Whilst the officers one with the makers plate looks odd as I would expect a Gaunt plate to applied - it appears to be part of the badge. Either that or the name would be on the die.

If it was bought as a cap badge then I would wonder whether the lugs were more correct for a collar?

The Vic one in the picture below has square brasing holes on the scroll.

3. The k/c is not the right construction for a 1902-22 16th Lancers badge. The design was retained after amalgmation.
I enclose a 16th/5th K/c cap badge for comparison. It was a badge that was still in service in the 1960s so later ones would not have brasing holes.

KC ORs looks fine.

The QVC is a cast copy as is the OSD which sports a fake Gaunt.

KC OR's fine as a 16th L or 16th/5th L badge?

Judging by the reverse and that slider, I would surmise 16th/5th.

Hi Jim

Just for the record I don't like any of them.

Regards Phil.

Out of interest, how is the wm element of the QVC badge fitted? I think for the reasons given previously its not a correct badge but the overlay looks strange, is it painted on?

Firstly, thank you to everyone for your input. It is much appreciated. The badges came from 3 different sources. The Victorian crown I will be returning this morning for an exchange or refund. The kings crown O/R came in a batch bought at auction so I'm afraid I'm stuck with that one. I am disappointed that the kings crown service dress, if this is not original. When it was bought at auction I could not see the reverse as it was attached to a bow tie along with another Australian forces badge and a set of red cross medals all original in thier original boxes. The bow ties were manufactured by Spink London and had spink stamped on the silver pin. Only on removal of the bow tie did I find the gaunt plate. So it seems strange that someone would add it for it only to be stitched onto and hidden by a bow tie. The plate is definitely added and is not part of the casting. Is it possible it could be a collar used for this purpose or just an out and out fake ? Incidentally, the Australian badge and all the other medals it came with are definitely real.

This is how they originally came.

I think it is most important to actually attend the viewing session at the saleroom concerned before actually buying any lot these days, if this is simply not possible, obtain a condition report and better photographs of a particular lot, from the saleroom before bidding.
I very much doubt if Spink actually manufacture textiles themselves, notwithstanding, it is not in any way relevant or connected with the cap badge.
From the photographs of the bronze badge you show, I cannot see it being original.

Just out of interest, here is the Australian badge also removed from a bow tie. It has the Luke markings on the reverse. Can anyone see any issues with this one, or can I count it as genuine?

Lancer 17 02-08-20 12:58 PM

G'day

Im happy that the Rising Sun is a genuine WW1 issue manufactured by KG Luke of Melbourne.

Regards

Phil.

The K/C ORs could be original but as stated it's not a 16th Lancers badge but a much later 16th/5th one.
