CEF Buttons
It is intended that Buttons (CEF) will be included in the book. I am writing this to ask for help in understanding this area and to ask for help in recording the "facts" on CEF buttons.
There seems to be only one "main" source of information on CEF Buttons - Eric Smylie's Buttons of the CANADIAN MILITIA_ARMY NAVAL and AIR FORCES_1900-1990. CEF buttons are also commented on in various Service Publication books (Kahki, Dress to Kill ...). The forth coming book will build upon these references and hopefully add to the information available concerning CEF Buttons. There seems to be 4 sizes of buttons - XL (Ligne 70- 1 3/4"- 44.5mm), LG (Ligne 40- 1"- 25.5mm), MED (28 Ligne-11/16"- 18mm) and SM (?? Ligne- ??"- ??mm). Does this seem correct? The conversion between the 5 button and 7 button tunics are one reason for different sizes, use on the Cap and Great Coats also are a reason for different sizes. Not all Inf Bn's had unique CEF buttons. Smylie suggests that there were 33 units using distinctive CEF buttons. His book is missing a few (Pay Corps), we have counted over 70 CEF specific button types (Unit) to date. What sizes exist for each unit. Does each unit have all 4 button sizes or 3 or ???. What different finishes are there? (Gilt, Black, Brass, ?) What are the manufactures of the CEF buttons? The book will show a full color, high resolution image of each button. for Units that have multiple sizes, the button displayed will be the large one (1"). The comments will include known or reported sizes, finishes and makers mark. Please help with this. You can respond in this tread and everyone will then gain from your info Thanks |

Marway sold a 46th Battalion South Saskatchewan in 2012 and gave the period as 1915-1918.

I am really looking for information. I need an education on this subject. There are some units that are known to have buttons that I do not have an image of. I'll post the images that are needed once I get a better idea of what "known" buttons there are

Larry, not sure that it is an issue if they are CEF specific or not. Some of the personnel (definitely not all) wore these corps buttons.

Bill, that was what I was thinking. If the insignia was worn during the First World War (permanent force, for example) it should be included in the project.
Larry, as requested, here are my 46th Bn buttons. |
