14TH SERVICE BATTALION THE ROYAL IRISH

Hi all, I would like if anyone would take a shot in giving me their opinion on this one. I picked it up the other day, in a hope of replacing one that was at that time lost in the mail to me. You guessed it, when I got home the same day; 10 weeks after purchase their it was on my desk. So I have what I hope if this one turns out to be OK, two.....:(

Any comments would be welcome.

cheers

Simon.

Hello Simon. Going on the crown- I would say no good. Regards, Paul.

What's the giveaway on the crown Paul

Simon.

As there doesn't seem to be a consensus on it's validity, I'll assume for now I can sell it on as the 14th.

Cheers all

The base width of the crown is more narrow on the good ones if that makes any sense. Regards, Paul.

IT ARRIVED TODAY

Hi Paul, it arrived today and I am puzzled. It is the one I posted at the beginning of the thread, but when measured it's exactly the same, well to my eyes.

The one on the right is my original period one. The measurement at the narrowest point on the crown is 12mm. I want to ask everyone if they see what I see, and I did nab another......:)

Thanks for any comments.

Regards

Simon.

I take it OK then?

Simon.

I looked through the forum on search and came up with some threads on this one, but to be honest it seems the majority have no idea what a real one looks like and there's not real definitive image from and back on here.

I'll wait in hope that some one has one and can post one day.

Cheers all

Simon, have a look in my top 20 album, page 2 & look at the crown & the jewels in it,
Wilf.

Thanks, I put in young citizen's in the search. So I take it your thinking both shown above are fakes.

Simon.

I'm not saying anything is a fake, just thought you'd like to compare pics that's all,
Wilf.

LONGSHANKS 09-03-12 06:17 PM

No, thanks Wilf, I see the narrowness of the crown base. I think that's an accepted bad sign if wider as in the images I posted.

Thanks for the pics to compare.

Cheers

Hope you dont mind me butting in but the IWM gallery has a good picture of the original at
http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30076844

As well as the narrow crown originals have a wrist on the hand, the stem is narrower also and the top vane on the left hand leaf is straighter. Copies tend to have one shaped like a banana. Patterns can be slider or loops.

This is the type that I would buy (for whatever my opinion is worth).

I go along with John to a large degree, although these are difficult. Based on pictures I have seen of badges with provenance, there are slight variations. Notably on the veins and the "cuff" on the hand. The common theme on most we see though is the wider crown and the stem.

Just my thoughts, for what they are worth. Neil
