Hi, any ideas as to the date of this badge? I have seen other similar badges but shaped differently, cheers, Rick

Hi Rick,
would you consider selling this badge?
Cheers,
Pieter

Bomb Disposal Badge

The badge was designed by Queen Mary in 1940 as a means of identification of Bomb Disposal units and appears in a number of shapes and variations.
Here are a few examples from my collection, the small version in the centre is still worn today.
Your badge, and bottom left onmy board is the bomb with black nose rings and is sometimes described as "2nd pattern" (1st pattern has blue rings) but Edwards and Langley in British Army Proficiency Badges say - "the rectangular version with black rings has a genuine wartime (WW2) pedigree according to a contemporary illustration."

Here are some of mine. I love the design. My German mother-inlaw was seriously injured during an air-raid on Bocholt in 1945. Needless to say she does not share my passion for these things :(

Heres mine on my sleeve next to a 250KG of the real thing, circa 1988.:)

For the original WWII version of this badge I read somewhere that the blue-ringed version was for the Royal Engineers, and the black-ringed version was for non-engineer units.

Can anyone confirm this?

Pieter. You are clearly an expert. Have you any idea what the attached - which was made in Northern Ireland, probably during World War 2, represents? Mike

Perhaps Jerry or someone else may be able to confirm.

All ranks of 33 EOD Regiment RE can proudly wear its special battle honour, A Yellow and Blue bomb on a Red background.

But only fully qualified combat engineers trained in EOD duties can wear the slightly smaller Yellow and Blue bomb on a Khaki background when posted outside of 33 EOD Regiment RE

Thanks very much. How on earth did I miss that. Postwarden would be mortified if he thought I wasn't reading every word! Mike

We all have so much information at our fingertips it is sometimes hard to remember where you saw it!

You have a very nice collection there Jerry. I see that you have both the Black-striped and the Blue-striped version of the original WWII badge. Do you know if the blue one was for Royal Engineers only, and the black one for other military units, as I mentioned above?

Thanks

John

John, As far as I know this badge was only worn by Royal Engineer bomb disposal units. As stated it was awarded by Queen Mary and is only worn by serving members of the EOD units. The small khaki one is a trade badge and is worn by ALL EOD trained personnel not serving in EOD.
I have noticed that I have 2 versions of the black ringed badge. As to which one was first-black or blue rings I don't know but bow to superior knowledge on this.

Jerry.

This could be a Home Guard or Civil defence badge made solely for use in Northern Ireland ??
I have never come across this type before.
