1870's/80's Royal Engineer Glengarry badge

Good Evening All

I have a medal in my collection to a Royal Engineer who saw action at the battle of Tofrek 22nd March 1885. I would love to get an original Glengarry badge to display with it but a little unsure of what a original one from this period looks like as their are a number of different ones on the internet and alot of fakes.

Could someone advice me what I should be looking for please.photos would be very helpful.

Kind Regards

Jack

Jack,

As far as I know they wore the pill box cap with no badge in that period, rather than a glengarry.

I am not 100% and someone may correct me but thats how I recall it.

regards

As Simon says I believe it was this style of headdress worn

Thankyou both for taking the time to reply.

Ok that's great to know. Did the OR RE chaps wear any insignia during the early 1880's?

When in full dress a Home service helmet (or Overseas) would be worn with a RE helmet plate as in picture 1
The second picture is a modern one and the helmet plate is Royal Jersey Militia Field Squadron RE

In undress they wore the pillbox forage cap as described by Manchester’s, above.

Sergeants and above had a gold lace band around the cap, and after July 1881 adopted the universal grenade hitherto worn by the RA as an arm badge above their rank stripes.

Corporals and Second Corporals (both substantive ranks) wore brass chevrons indicating their rank on the pillbox cap, but no other insignia.
