2nd Tower Hamlets VRC

Hi,

Could anybody kindly advise me of any known repository for service records or musters for the 2nd Tower Hamlets Volunteer Rifle Corps, for the period either side of 1900?

My 2 x great uncle, William Charles BATTEY (1879-1935), was with this unit prior to serving a year with 2/RIR during the Boer War (1900-01). He was attested and medically examined at 66 Tredegar Road, Bow, London, where I note the Volunteers had their drill hall. I would be interested to see if he returned to the VRC following his SA service with the Irish Rifles.

Any help would be much appreciated.

2nd Tower Hamlets Volunteer Rifles

The lineage is complicated but the 2nd THVR were first stand alone under the Comptroller of the Tower of London and then moved to affiliation with the Rifle Bde. After 1908 they became part of the London Regt as the 17th Bn (Poplar and Stepney) Rifles. In WW2 they became again a part of the Rifle Bde (as a Territorial Bn) and in 1946-47 re-roled to be a battery in the Royal Artillery. They later became re-aligned with the Royal Green Jackets (latterly as 4th (TA) Bn) and I understand finished up with the Royal Rifle Volunteers before becoming 6th or 7th Bn of The Rifles, a new regiment formed in 2006.

The new regiments historical focus is the Green Jackets Museum in Winchester, Hants.

I hope this helps.
