Poppy Appeal Pins
I'm am attempting to collect pins supporting the RBL Poppy Appeal, and will be starting a Gallery when I have time.
At the moment I am looking for 2007 to 2010 Poppy Pins (not sure if there was an earlier 2006 pin or not) So if anyone can help please, please let me know. |
They frequently turn up on ebay.
|
Not as often as you think mate. later ones yes.

I think you might have your work cut out doing this, I help collect every year so had the same idea but got a real surprise at the price some of them go for.
I think I'll be saving the attached photo from eBay for this year when the odd one or two complain about the suggested donation amount. Michael |
I live in hope. I have pins from 2010 onwards, and now have confirmation that there was a 2006 example. As well as the earlier undated examples with 10am & 2pm leaves.
I have 2011 onwards to trade. |
The information I had from the RBL is: The official RBL metal enamelled pins started in 2010 a little smaller and slightly different than the next one in 2011 both undated. The larger dated pins started in 2012.
There are numerous dated pins available, but, I am told they are not RBL pins. Just looked in your poppy album, my local Post Office may still have some of the pins in your image. Marc |

Earlier dated pins were sold via the RBL Poppy Shop at that time still located at Aylsford, but not distributed to PAO's which is why earlier dates were in smaller batchs.
First official pin was a small 'Poppy Stud' issued circa 2005 followed by a undated pin with 2 O'clock leaf in 2006 till 2010 and were available in singles via the shop or in bags of 50 at a discount for branch fundraising. [card 1] The leaf changed to the 11 O'clock position in 2011 which was still only available via the shop in singles (only the undated pins were sold in bags of 50 and were till 2015) [card 2] (not complete) From the 2012 Poppy Appeal PAO's & CFR's could order limited amounts of dated pins for sale in support of the Poppy Appeal and these were provided FOC instead of having to buy them via the Poppy Shop, with all profits banked via the Poppy Appeal [card 3] From 2014 larger WW1 Centenary Pins were issued in support of the Poppy Appeal and will be till 2018 [card 4] Which way the poppy pin will go in 2019 is not yet known. These images will be added to Album. I am a PAO and have received pins from 2011 from either the Poppy Shop or direct from Poppy Appeal in Aylsford. |

Hi Jerry, Have just obtained 2006, 2007 & 2010 examples and still looking for 2008 & 2009 examples.
Undated pin with 2 O'clock leaf were sold via poppy shop till 2010, The one to look for is the 2005 small poppy stud. I have a spare 10 O'clock undated if you need one. |

What is the meaning of PAO and CFR please. Marc |
PAO = Poppy Appeal Organiser
There is also a CPAC = County (later Community) Poppy Appeal Coordinator who are volunteers and CFR = Community FundRaiser who are paid who managed PAO's in the county assisted by the CPAC |

I've just been and checked my undated pins after all this discussion, I hadn't cottoned on to the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock leaves.
I seem to have a 10 o'clock and an 11 o'clock one as well as the 2 o'clock one in my jacket. Good to have the list of what's out there. Michael |
Opps, While they may look 10 O'clock, they are intended to represent 11 O'Clock
|
That's what I always thought so the 2 o'clock one seems odd, but I suppose they always say the correct way to wear it is with pride so where the leaf points is irrelevant really (outside of us looking for collectible variations).

I have been buying these dated poppy badges at a rate of one a year ever since I first noticed them for sale on ebay. About three quid each. 2008 is the earliest of the nine I have. If only I had known I would have got 100 not one. I expect that this means I will never get the earlier years that I now know exist. |
I think that depends on how savy your friends are and how many have previous years pins tucked away in their man drawers that they might be willing to donate to a friend's collection :D
|
I have now only 2 years to locate - 2008 & 2009 and as you say Shiny, eBay is not the only source and friends & contacts sometimes do indeed have one lurking in a drawer, and picked up a 2006 example on a simple trade for some later pins.
I do in fact have several dozen of all 2011 and onwards pins ;-) as stock returns via the Poppy Appeal, and all proceeds go back into the appeal. |
Real or Fake ?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi ,
I'm ex army (Artillery) and collect various poppy pins , especially the "Centenary" ones. I have all 4 of the "Provenance metal" ones , I thought that using old artillery fuses to make objects to commemorate those who died to be very touching and appropriate. I recently saw online a 2018 poppy ( not the usual 1918-2018 one) and was not sure if it was a genuine item issued/sold by the RBL or simply a fake/counterfeit ? Any help/advice would be appreciated as there are so many people trying to cash in on the "Centenary". Will post some photos of my collection at a later date. Thanks Mike V |
Fakes ?
2 Attachment(s)
Have just seen another couple of "dodgy" pins , these are dated:
1912-2012 1913-2013 As I can see no reason why the "double dates" would be of any significance , other than to cash in on 'Centenary' , I have to assume they are another case of fakes being produced to con people. I have contacted the RBL and given them details so they can take action over the obvious copyright breeches. Mike V |

A couple more :
4. London Underground/TFL. 5. Buses and Tube trains. From one of the staff involved ; "We commissioned and produced the badges with our own money, had get seek approval from internal departments within TfL, as well as getting approval from the Royal British Legion to use the poppy design." These badges aren't sold in stations , they are predominately for TFL/LU staff and all profits go to RBL. When I have bought them either the seller has made a donation or I have. |

Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine RBL issued / approved pin or simply one made for show/profit ?

Hi
How old do you want your poppies? I've got some from the 1920s including a couple of the first poppy appeal held here in NZ in 1921 (although it actually was held in 1922, due a to a hold up with the shipment, I'm told). Interestingly enough it says "DECORATIONS DAY" on the small paper tag. The poppies were in a small lot from an antique shop some years ago and someone put together quite a "run" of these up until the mid-1940s. There is also a very early British poppy that has a most realistic paper flower and a small round red label that mentions the BL. I'd have to check on this however! Happy to help! |
