SA in E Africa, 1940/1941

I'd appreciate some help with these two.
The photos show the uncle of a pal, taken in Ethiopia or the Kenya-Ethiopia border, in 1940 or 1941.
My questions are:
- from the uniforms, can you tell what unit the African soldiers are with?
- what does the number 397 on the truck signify? It seems to be on several vehicles in other photos.
thanks
Rob

Rob, the serial 397 relates to a unit of a Line of Communication Area, or Command, Army, or GHQ Troops issued from the mid to late 1940s. These were issued by the senior HQ concerned, not by UK. They changed again in the Middle East in late 1941 and 397 then fell into the RA block.

Without a background colour/s it is impossible to tell what Arm or Service the unit belongs to.
