Intelligence Corps Silver Cap badge
 

Can anyone shed any light on when the Intelligence Corps Officers stopped using the silver plated metal cap badge that you often see for sale? I assume this coincided with the decision to drop forage/SD caps in favour of the cypress green beret in all Orders of Dress. Does anyone know when this was - 1992 Options for Change perhaps?

Long before Options for Change, the cypress green beret was adopted in 1977 as the all ranks universal headdress. Initially officers wore the smaller silver plated collar badge, this was replaced by a full-size bullion embroidered badge in the late 1980s.

The silver badge had an NSN of 8455-99-130-3864. Although replaced in the 1980's it was still recorded in COSA of 1987 and 1993.

I notice that many badges persist in COSAs/JSPs long after they have been abandoned.

The Royal Regiment of Wales Officers' silver/electrogilt metal badge (NSN 8455-99-138-3008) is a good example. This appears as late as JSP 2005 long after it was replaced (in the late 80s I think) by the silver wire embroidered PoW feathers on the Officer's forage cap.

The modern 'New Metal' Royal Regiment of Wales officer cap badge (as you say) is 8455-99-138-3008 pattern No. 21258 being first sealed on 29th Dec 1975 and later resealed in 'New Metal' on 1st Aug 1994. It was deleted from inventory on 12th Aug 2009.

Mind you, if it was actually worn I have no idea as this sort of official info is very difficult to find.

I can confirm that this was worn on RRW khaki peaked caps up to amalgamation.

Would that be on OSD rather than forage caps?

Just because the bullion badge has been mentioned, here's one on a "Golding's" manufactured cap, does the haphazard looking stitching through the cap lining indicate that a metal badge would have been removed and replaced by the bullion?
