Hello

Firstly, thankyou for accepting me into the forum!

The reasons for me joining are that my Grandfather has recently passed away and served under the Sherwood Foresters, over the years he has collected circa 1000 cap badges and dog collars which we do not really have much information on. We are aware of a few of the ones collected but the majority i think he has just accumulated over the years of which could contains some reproductions. We intend on keeping a couple of which hold sentimental value but the remainder we intend on selling as we just do not have the space! I have attached the images taken and appreciate you cannot see the backs to verify their legitimacy but any comments or information or even appraisals would be great!

There are more than the attached but unfortunately i can’t upload more than 15 images.

Thanks for reading and i look forward to seeing any light which can be shed!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry for your loss.

Closer up images are needed, I’d suggest maybe taking pictures of sections of boards rather than the whole boards themselves. Some will require pictures of the back too.

However, from what I can see there are quite a lot of fakes I’m afraid, I can see several tall orb Arty fakes, the Royal Naval Division badges all look fake, top row of B’ham Pals are all fakes would need better images of the bottom row but there may be hope for those, the Airborne/SF card looks mostly all fakes as too is the London card, the brass/GM cavalry majority are fakes too.

Again sorry for the loss of your Grandfather ,welcome to the Forum , I agree with Luke in his thoughts on your badges, as suggested there might be a chance on a few that could be ok & again as Luke said some clearer pictures of both front and back ( in our hobby the backs as important, if not more than the front) would be a good idea , are you planning on once assed good or bad selling to forum members?

Thankyou both, as mentioned we have no real idea and there is that many! we did have an inkling to many being fakes / placeholders as i know this was just something he enjoyed doing with no access to the internet he would have just browsed small shops and acquired them that way just as a hobby! i have an appointment to take them into a shop to get them looked at, it’s just interesting as we had no real idea as to how many he actually had as the birds were stored in a wardrobe! once they have been looked at in person i will keep you posted as to what the findings were 👍🏼 appreciate your help!

In regards to selling them, i will confirm the findings and see whether they are of interest to anyone on here, once we have a vague idea hopefully i can provide the ones worth selling with images of both front and back to see if anyone is after any👍🏼

Hi, sorry for your loss. I too can see a lot of copies, the Norfolk is, and some, if not all the glengarry badges. But thanks for posting. Which part of the uk are you.

Hi, thankyou for your kind words. Originally from Coventry but now living in Solihull.

If you are going to sell them, you might be better selling them on here. If you don't, try not to get ripped off.

Thanks for the advice Andy, i’m in no rush to sell them to be honest! won’t be pressured into a sale! ideally would like to sell them all as a package! appreciate it could be difficult to sell so many at once? not too sure what people’s stances are in buying bulk?

thanks

You will not be able to sell them on the forum as one bulk lot as forum rules prohibit sale of fakes.

You may also want to read this thread if you intend to sell on here:

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=78876

In my previous message I forgot to add most of the badges on the Yeomanry card are fakes too.

absolutely agree mate, mainly one of the reasons i am taking them to someone first so i can separate the legitimate ones from
the counterfeits. As mentioned previously i have no clue about the majority so any advice or information is welcomed

This could be a very painful and drawn out process. The easiest way would be to find a local collector and get them to look at each in turn. If you want to take the time to take a photo of each front and back and put them in an album on the forum then i would be happy to offer comment but it would be an effort to create an album for you. you have to bear in mind many many be contentious!

Alot are copies I am afraid.

You’re telling me! i have an appointment with a specialist who has confirmed he will take a look on the 7th October so will keep you posted on the findings, i am personally no expert in this field so always worth getting checked out! there is only one badge he has mentioned to me which was his favourite that i intend on keeping so fingers crossed it’s a legit one i can keep hold of!

I’ve rotated the picture of the B’ham Pals and bottom row and they are fakes too I’m afraid of the variety attached.

Like Alan said this could be a painful process. Looking at the cavalry board there are many fakes there too. I suspect your grandad only began collecting post 1970s, likely far more recently, when the market was saturated with repros.

The only remaining board which has badges which may be of significant value is the top two rows of the one I’ve attached. The red crosses denote fakes.

To be honest, if the person in the shop makes you a decent offer I’d snap their hand off. The fakes are worth perhaps a couple of quid each on eBay, that’s if they sell, and like you said individual photos and packaging of each is a lot of work.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Cheers Luke, i think you could be right! collecting after circa 1970 would be about right i’m in honest, i would have imagined he had some legit ones and decided to try and expand on what he had maybe from just an aesthetic and hobby point of view, really appreciate your comments and advice to be honest! i think the last thing i would have wanted to do is go into a shop and get low balled but from the feedback i have an idea of what to expect to be honest! Cheers👍🏼
