Several previous threads about this badge but cant find them.

To recap its a badge worn by both civilians, pipe bands and some military.

A universal thistle badge indicative of a Scottish connection.

We used to wear a badge very similar to this on our doublet collars when I was in the Caledonian Pipe Band of Buffalo, NY back in the 70s.
As mentioned, a sort of universal Scottish insignia.

What is the size of the badge? A similar one was worn by the Royal Scottish Reserve Regiment, which would be about 2" diameter. The collar badge size one on a doublet is probably smaller.

Thanks for the suggestions and information. I'm afraid I don't have the badge. It is a friend of mine who asked if I knew what it is. I will ask him for a size and put it on when I have it, in case it narrow it down a bit.

Is that also true after the renumbering into the 7th (in 1880)?
