More from Laurie Archer ( 1970`s )

At this afternoons MHS meeting at Derby I was loaned some copies of Laurie Archer Lists from the 1970`s and 1980`s.These contain some interesting and ( even today ) relevant bits of information on military badges and the hobby of collecting them.

If this, from April 1979 is found to be of interest ,I will post more in the future.

Peter,
How odd in that it was OK to name and shame someone in those heady days...... now, he would get sued - or rather be threatened.....
Thanks for publishing. I do recall his name from that period as I bought my original Vol1 "back in the day". I think I got my Vol2 in the 80's.

Thanks, David

This is brilliant stuff! How times have changed. Does anyone by any remote chance have a 1950s/1960s catalogue by I think, Mr Tobin of 90 Munton Road, Elephant and Castle? If so I would love to see a scan of the section on cloth insignia.

Having had a further opportunity of looking at the material, some pages are relevant to some recent threads.

Interestingly those are the very same VTCs that are still being faked today. Kent Vol Fencibles completes the set of fake VTCs!

Peter

thank you so much for posting these notes, I appreciate these very much. Between all of us we can educate each other on how to find and buy genuine items.

What a loss . . !

What a loss to the badge collecting world Laurie Archer was, an honest man, an honest dealer, very helpful to collectors like myself identifying badges where no information was available in those days.

I once bought a 5th Lancs RVC helmet plate from Roger Verner and something he had not mentioned in the description was that the crown and top scroll were missing, so as can be imagined I was disappointed to say the least when the item arrived.

Mike, I cannot post any of Bill Tobins lists of cloth badges ( he did literally sell anything with a military connection and a number of MHS members at Derby yesterday remember spending their pocket money with him ). Thanks to Rob ( Sonofacqms ) who kindly sent me a copy of an old Tobin list some time ago ( which is thought to be from the late 1960`s ), here are some of the badges he was offering:

Again, Well done Peter for publishing.
Ironic, in that the only person who is prepared to stand up and be counted these days with regard to naming fakers/forgers is the Rhodesian badge site. He does a remarkable job and his articles have stopped me from buying some item. I am fairly certain I had dealings with Laurie and he is missed.

I agree, how refreshing it must have been to name and shame dodgy dealers and I agree with your sentiment David, there are so few people willing to stand up and be counted.

The comic book activities of Roger Verner are incredibly similar to the activities of our own comic book character (PT or Scooby Doo for those that don't know) that everyone is scared of challenging for fears of threats.

These are the last parts of the Laurie Archer lists that I will be posting, some interesting bits and pieces amongst them. I hope they are legible and will be of interest.

Excellent Peter, particularly the comment on the "VB" plaques and stencil shape cut-outs - and number spacing of the fusiliers glengarries.
