On the Horizon, New British Special Operations Ranger Regiment
 

Perhaps some new insignia to chase in the future...... Or not.....

Planned new addition to the British Army capabilities, a Special Operations Ranger Regiment. Structure identified to consist of 4 battalions, functioning within a new special operations brigade.

The announcement (I have it on good authority), will also see a reduction in "conventional" Infantry leading to the demise of Battalions within Multi Battalion Infantry Regiments. Be interesting to see whether the Parachute Regiment emerges unscathed (again). There are likely to be Political influences brought to bear...I know of one British Infantry Battalion that is under threat despite being 95% manned, whereas there are others at 40% strength which are not under threat due to their recruiting area. As they say, go figure ….

Could be a convenient way to get around to tidying up the PWRR, RRF and Royal Anglians, it gets rid of the one regular battalion of RRF that's rattling around and overcomes the "Princess's Royal Anglian Fusiliers", "Home Counties and East of England Fusiliers" or whatever clumsy new regimental name issue.
Then again The Rifles seem to be a brand that may be promoted still further as Rangers?
I take it that the Royal Regiment of Scotland will remain unmolested?

So, we've had Connaught Rangers, Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, Royal Irish Rangers, any more?
So the term ' Ranger ', on a military basis, where did it derive from, the US, GB, or somewhere else?
An interesting concept, no good if 12000 Russian tanks cross somewhere in NATO's stomping ground!

The name along with its Special Operations role seem to me at least to be an uninspired copycat of the US Army Rangers.

Thinking of a backlash from some British units, similar to that from US Rangers and Special Forces when berets the same as or similar colours to theirs were adopted by other units?
It's not something I know anything about but remember reading bout that some while back.

It does seem that way Luke, first thing I thought of was ' very American ', nothing against those guys, but why copy?!

I was wrong - The Royal Regiment of Scotland will provide a Ranger battalion, as will The Rifles and others.
And goodbye to 2 Mercian......

Rogers' Rangers were on 'our' side, so you could argue that the Yanks nicked the idea from us, rather than the other way round.

Not seen the details yet, but isn't this a just rebranding of the Specialised Infantry Group for their FIDF (Foreign Internal Defence) training role?

.....so they reduce the Army by 10k men..... and create a Rangers regiment by nicking the best from the battalions that still exist?
