Mixed Canadian.1

I'm not a specialised Canadian collector per se but I do have a fair amount of Canadian badges among my collectables. I would welcome hearing from any established Canadian collectors inasmuch as they would be able to advise me if there is anything especial among this card. Be glad to answer any queries. The SDG badge has brooch fastener.

Hello GTB,

The most desirable badges, in the order you have displayed them, are the following:

1. 51 Soo Rifles
2. (VRI) The Royal Canadian Regiment
3. 9th Grey's Horse
4. Oxford Rifles
5. New Brunswick Dragoons
6. 79 Highlanders

My opinion is subject to viewing close up photos of both sides of each badge in order to confirm authenticity. As you are probably aware, repros are unfortunately prevalent. The other insignia in your display are fairly common. Cheers,

Walt

Hi Walt
Many thanks for your prompt reply and my appreciation for your interest and asistance.
I have scanned as best as can the badges you indicated but I will need to see about getting pics of the backs, as scanner will scan out-of-focus.

Till then, the following info applies to the badges you indicated:
1. slider
2. loops; 2-piece mounted
3. slider
4. loops; matt black back
5. loops; back stamped 'W SCULLY LTD'
6. loops

Thanks again
GTB

The Soo Rifles is a common fake.

Bill A 01-07-20 11:25 PM

As Phil said, the 51st Soo is a well documented fake. I have reservations about the Oxford Rifles, and the 79th Cameron's is damaged.

Thanks guys, I have taken note of your comments.
I never noticed the 79th having a trimmed down crown - a case of not seeing the wood for the trees! Its previous owner must have had a perverted sense of satisfaction by vandalising in order to look more pleasing to the eye - or so he thought.

I am unable to transfer camera images of the backs as there is a glitch with not being able to connect to the network. Will send when back online or whatever

In meantime, am enclosing another card for all helpful comments

Morning (Canada time),
The CTTC cap badge is plastic? It is a scarcer badge. The Canadian Beavers was a precursor of the CWAC. Again, a better badge. The CATS badge has been repro'd and most of the badges on the market are copies. Detail images would be needed to determine. The stag badge, how many lugs? It doesn't look Cdn. The bottom centre and right badges are generic Cdn police badges.

Hi Bill, thanks for reply.
No, the CTTC badge is not plastic, I'm afraid. It is brass and stamped W. SCULLY LTD MONTREAL at back.
Cannot take pics of backs of badges (network problem when sending) but the CATS badge has a yellow brass finish, unlike the front which has a subdued brass finish.
Re the stag badge. it has 2 lugs (one repaired). It came in a very old frame of mixed British and Empire badges and the reason I have placed among Canadian items is because I have seen it among Canadian items although forget where. I am not sure if it is a sporran item.

NB Just noticed that badge is partly voided

Bill A 02-07-20 04:55 PM

Pretty sure that is one of the copies.
The brass CTTC is still a scarcer badge, but not in the same category as the plastic one.
The stag badge could be Pictou Highlanders, but hard to say positively.

GTB 03-07-20 07:54 AM

As I see it, the problem with stag being Pictou is the metal,(mine brass) apart from the antlers on mine being narrow opening Would sporran badges have loops or threaded posts?

In the meantime can anyone verify this button (Wm. Scully Ltd. Montreal backmark)

Bill A 03-07-20 12:25 PM

Some Pictou badges were brass, but again, it could be for several other Scottish regiments.
The button is identified as the first pattern RCEME, circa 1944-1950.

Thanks Bill, a nice button to have. The stagshead badge will fall into place eventually. As it came from a local frame I need to check which Scottish and Scottish Commonwealth units were in Malta especially at turn of century.

What are your views on this 67th cef badge? Die-struck and 2 small loops at back. Back has a light bronze finish

From the image it looks OK, but iirc, Croft Militaria subjected these to their practices and made copies. Need a good close image of the front and back.

GTB 04-07-20 08:08 PM

OK thanks. Afraid another joins the queue for sharp imaging, don't know what is affecting the transmission of my camera pics

Didn't understand your 'iirc'
