Can anyone identify this badge and give me any info on it? And any idea if it's common or rare etc? It is made of brass and white metal, 2 lugs on the back, I have a pair of them.
Thanks in advance

Hi

I think these may be Indian Army, judging by construction, and long fixings possibly to fit on to shoulder chains, so might be cavalry. I've seen similar but can't remember where.
I'll post more if I come across anything more positive.

Possibly the 6th KEO Cavalry (1846-1921 : British Indian)

Thanks for the info. It says "ich dein" on the side of the feathers. Further research leads me to wonder if it's "RFA 6C Reserve Brigade consisting of 52, 146 and 147 Batteries, Glasgow (possibly Maryhill Barracks)". The 6C just bought me to this, I'm not sure if it's relevant or not.
Thanks again for your help, as you can probably tell I don't know a lot about this subject

I agree, that's my best guess as well, but confirming that i.e. finding a reference/image of these in wear might prove difficult.

They are nice items and are not common IMO, but clearly they have a limited appeal to the collectors of such.

6th Prince of Wales's Cavalry

The 6th Prince of Wales's Cavalry was raised in 1842 at Fatehgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, by Lieutenant Ryves.

Raised in 1842, they first saw service in the Gwalior campaign earning the battle honour “Punniar”. The regiment was part of the 2nd (Sialkot) Cavalry Brigade during the First World War. The various changes and amalgamations are listed below.

Lineage:-
1. 1842 8th Irregular Cavalry
2. 1861 Regiment of Bengal Cavalry
3. 1883 6th (The Prince of Wales’s) Bengal Cavalry
4. 1901 6th Prince of Wales’s cavalry
5. 1906 6th King Edward’s Own Cavalry.

Chain mail shoulder title, along with the 6th (mounted) and 8th Cavalry below:-

As the motto should read "Ich dien", I hope you made a typo, else the badge is a hoax imho.

Well done, not as hard as I'd thought to locate something on this, indeed easier that some British badges I could mention.
lt's a nice image you've posted, but unfortunately you can't clearly see the title detail, but I'm sure its there.

However, I think I have found a confirming reference:

Bengal Cavalry Regt's by R.G.Harris Pub.Osprey Men at Arms Pages 14-15.

Quote:

"Lovett provides a magnificent study of a mounted Jat Sower of 1908. On the metal Shoulder-chains he would have the metal title, as shown in our selection of badges, incorporating the Silver Plume and numerals of Brass"

I can't show the selection of badges as I ain't got the book, but I'm sure someone on the forum has?

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Rob

The shoulder title above has silver/Wm POWFs with brass numeral and letter..... so its just another confirmation :)

I think this is the Officers gilt pouch scroll....(Just for added interest).

Sorry don't understand this comment,I must be missing something here!!?

I thought 'the Rookie' posted the images of the title, so we know what it looks like, we're trying to confirm its use in wear or reference aren't we???

Sorry Rob... no need for confusion. I thought you had added a bit more information to confirm from the description in #8.

Sorry, missed this completely. I have the book here and there is indeed a selection of eleven badges shown on page 39, of which number 8 has the caption:
Shoulder badge, 6th Cavalry, early 1900s
It shows a shoulder badge with text VI BC (thus not 6 C as the subject here). In the middle there is a POW feathers, but the scroll with the ICH DIEN is absent (broken?). The picture is rather dark. I will try to scan it later in the day.

My conclusion is that the badge from the book is pre 1903 (when the title included Bengal Cavalry) and the one here is post 1903 (after dropping the word Bengal due to the unification).

I have also seen a rude picture of a cap badge (officer's I guess) post 1906 (6th King Edward's Own Cavalry) which does not show the POW feathers any more. I assume that they were then also removed from the shoulder titles. Thus the badge here was rather short living.

And as an add on to the lineage already shown by GriffMJ: http://hcvv.home.xs4all.nl/milweb/Br...alry/cav18.pdf

Here it is. Not the best quality (due to the book), but usable.
