Royal Green Jackets 2n Bn or Kings Royal Rifle Corp

I received coloured cloth Parachute wings and after going thru the forum , wiki and Oliver Locks Airborne book, I'm confused and dont know the history of there uses and or if they are legit or still worn today.
I used Alain Conradi's thread as a starter.
https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...coloured+wings

I will start a thread for each one:

2 Bn Royal Green Jackets or KRRC?

Oliver Locks book has a document outlining coloured wings only has pg2 and no date of issue.

2nd Green Jackets special Badge Black on Scarlet although mine looks Gunmetal Grey not a solid Black.

This also has an adhesive film on the back , could this be current issue or a replica.

How is this awarded, is it based on individual within the Regt or the Regt as a whole?

When would this wing have been issued/used?

What dress uniform would this have been used.

cheers

Phill,
Part of the answer:
In all British Forces, parachute wings are awarded to the individual following successful completion of selection and training. They are not, and never have been, awarded to a unit.
Once awarded to the individual they may be worn in perpetuity and in various forms worn on most uniforms including combat, Full Dress, No 1 Dress, No 2 Dress and Mess Dress.
The number of qualified personnel and airborne units has reduced year on year from the 1970s to date. Most parachute wings have been reproduced and sold to collectors for many years.

Thanks Tim

So would you classify this to be a reproduction sold to collectors?

If genuine it should be more than 50 years old and have been made before 1966 when the Royal Jackets were formed and black on scarlet badges were replaced.
There is a smaller version in black on scarlet said to worn by 2GR.
I probably have most of the colour variations in my collection but very difficult to date them!

The SBS wing in the third pic is a very strange shape Tim. Is it one of the very early 2003 versions?

Thanks Tim

The adhesive backing gave me concerns when I received it and wanted confirmation.

Also its good to know originals would of been from the 80's.

The correct Royal Green Jackets wing is shown in post 4 ,2nd image ,centre right under the label.
There is another version with the wings higher up the chute.

Thanks Tim, Marc

This has been a valuable lesson on coloured wings and hope other collectors will learn from it as I have.

Over the years I have seen these wings and only until recently, when I won these in an auction down here (equivalent to 2 quid ea), I started to do what research I could and found that there were plenty of images but no real substance behind the dating and confirmation of coloured wings.

Tim I did see your comment on Alain Conradi's thread "I make no claim that this selection are all genuine, approved or issued," which made me think what was genuine, approved or issued.

Marc good to know the date of issue and at least we can understand when dating this wing for an original, to look for a 1950's (possibly 60's?) embroidered wing ,would like to see an original and image of its use.

cheers team

Phill
