Natal Frontier Guard

Hi, I have just received the silvered Natal Frontier Guard badge and wanted to share it. I have had the blackened badge for sometime now. They were based in Ladysmith from 1860-1870's. This is one of the very early Natal units. Have a great day. Andrew

Never heard of them... I was fascinated to read something on the www about them and would be keen to hear more details.

"Raised around 1858 at Ladysmith with a strength of 36 mounted men. this green glad force served with Captain Allison's Force which entered Bastutoland in 1873 in pursuit of King Langalibalele of the AmaHlubi. Amalgamated with the Natal Caribineers."

One of the northern natal commando units (might have been Dundee?) had a skull and bones on their shoulder flash. I wonder if it was inspired by the NFG badge or merely a coincidence?

Hi Rob, I haven't been able to find much on them. I can confirm from different sources, they were raised in Ladysmith. This is one of the older lesser known Natal units. Very nice and well made badges. Have a great weekend. Andrew
