Reinforcement badge help needed

A while ago I managed to solve the Reinforcement RD number riddle, unfortunately my collection of NZ Reinforcement badges is small, so I could only identify the designers of the reinforcement badges that I had on hand to work with.

Now I have already asked a couple of NZ badge collectors (including two from this forum) to record the RD numbers on badges that are in their collections.
Its been well over a year or two since then, and so far I have received no RD numbers to work with.
So I am hoping this forum will produce better results.

The list I have put together so far is - RD -
812
861 (RSA badge)
868 (NZ Specialist hat badge)
876 (NZ Specialist hat & collar badge)
887 (22nd hat badge)
899 (23rd hat badge)
914 (24th MR hat badge)
916 (25th hat badge) (910 collars?)
930 (26th hat badge)
936 & 937 (26th hat badge)
938 (28th hat badge)
957 (Featherston camp trumpet band)
961 (30th hat badge)
970 (31st hat badge)
982 (33rd hat badge)

Here are a few of mine that I can't see on your list.
Seriously testing my eyes , I have a couple of 19th Caps but can't clearly make out the rear RD stamp on either of them.
Hope the others are of use.
Cheers
Corey

Cheers Corey they are a good start.
The 19th Reos badge is confirmed as RD874.
The "B" visible on the 27th collar suggests the badge was made by William Bock, and your 33rd cap is probably also marked WB for Bock, but I don't think he was the designer of either of these badges.

Tinto you are not one of the two I was referring to. However in all fairness, I should mention that one forum member has his badges wired to a board, so not an easy task for him to add to the information, and the other forum member who is about 10 minutes drive from me, said if I wanted the RD numbers, I can come down and record them for myself.

It comes down to the more RD numbers I can get, the more information I can share.

As an example – “RD812” which is found on the following “Type 12” B/XV reinforcement hat badge, and the “Type 3” 12th reinforcement collar badge.

The following document shows that the Registered Design number 812 was granted on the 6th December 1915 to Wellington badge maker Mayer & Kean.

Hi Corey, always good to add to the list, unfortunately some of the registered designs have eluded me; such is the case for the 30th Reinforcement badges 961 & 962.

The problem is that with the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, the NZ Patent Office existing workload of processing applications was pretty much put on the back burner, while they became responsible for the enforcing of wartime trade regulations.
Due to the wars disruption in trade and communications, the NZ Patent Office extended the usual allowable time of just a few weeks for the filing of patent applications, to be extended for the duration of the war, and for much of the early post-WW1 period the Patent Office was engaged in dealing with the backlog of work created by the war.

As such the process during the war was that NZ Reinforcement badge designs were submitted to the Patents Office, fees were paid to register their design, for which a receipt was given, and later a certificate with the registered number was mailed out to the applicant.
So in short, during the war years the correct process of submitting and registering Reinforcement badge designs was not always followed, and although certificates with the registered number were issued, they were not always recorded in the Design Register, and in some cases the badges were recorded in the Design Register, but the certificate with the registered number was not issued.

However, in most cases I have managed to match most of the NZ Reinforcement badge RD numbers with only a few exceptions.

Interestingly enough your own avatar of a 24th Reinforcement collar badge, is a perfect example of the correct process of submitting and registering badges was not always followed, which oddly ended up in a court case during the war, which eventually I will discuss more at length in the “A, B, C & RDs of New Zealand Reinforcement Badges” thread that I have started.

Although I have not found a record of the 24th Reinforcement collar badge RD920, the Registered Design record of the 24th Reinforcement cap badge RD922, shows that although the design was recorded as being registered by Captain Francis Potter, Officer Commanding ‘A’ Company, 24th Reinforcements on the 24th November 1916, did not receive its certificate with the registered number until the 12th September 1917, which was 5 months after the 24th Reinforcements had embarked.

Thank you for your great info.
Speaking of the 24th I was aware that the collar came in two types (High bone /Low Bone)but I seem to have two types of Cap badge.
The bull dogs face, lack of RD No., and cut out detail look rather different badge to badge.
Attached are pictures from my collection.
Any thoughts.
Cheers
Corey

Another RD number?

2 Attachment(s)
Hi

Not a cap or collar badge but photos of two patriotic fobs sent to me some years back.

One bears the RD number 803 as part of the front design, the other has an indistinct number struck to the reverse that may also be 803. "REG" has been used instead of RD but it clearly has the same meaning. Likely to have been made in Wellington.

Possibly sold to raise funds for sick and wounded?

dumdum 27-06-22 11:01 AM

Just realised that looking at the very comprehensive list from the earlier post that 803 would be much the earliest number of those listed so far.:D

Can we advance a possible date for these?

milcollectorblue 27-06-22 03:17 PM

Adding To the Comprehensive RD List

Looking through my Reinforcements collection I can add the following to the growing 'Master RD List':

RD922 - 24th hat
RD916 - 25th hat
RD931 - 26th collar (might just be a typo in your original listing)
RD959 - 29th hat (confirmed as it is marked on the reverse of the badge)
RD961 - 30th collar as well as the hat
RD982 - 33rd hat also appears to have the letters 'BOC' on the left hand curl.

As for all the others on the 'Master RD List' my badges correspond.

I hope that helps!

Lovat
