Hi all,

Any ideas what unit this could be and from what period it's from?

Many thanks in advance.

Looks like the top of a bell top shako. The VR monogram is for Queen Victoria.

It is indeed for the bell top Shako, an officer's example. Being silver, I would assume for some volunteer unit. I believe the red and white ball was worn by a number of regiments/battalions.

During the Napoleonic Wars and for some time after the red and white plume indicated a center or line company in a battalion. The grenadier company wore and all white plume and the light company an all green plume.
