National Reserve and Veteran Reserve Badges

Have been collecting National Reserve and Veteran Reserve badges for some time now and thought it was time to do a list of what I have to date.
I will also do an album for the forum when I get a bit more time, but it would be nice if any members have and other county or town National or Veteran Reserve badges that are not on my list to let me know that way I can put it into a database so I know what others I have to look for.
Many thanks for any help or even images of your badges.
It would be good to find out how many variations of the different county or town badges were made, it is quite common to see the same badge but with either National Reserve or Veteran Reserve.

London

Andy,

As is covered (although not comprehensively) in other threads, London was divided into 29 Battalions. Some of these (Islington, Lewisham and Westminster are 3 that I have) had their own badges, although most were identified by the number on the rifle butt on the "standard" badge.

Away from home at the moment, but will post pictures when I'm back.

Best regards, Tim

For Essex, National Reserve and Veteran Reserve, both based on the Essex Yeo cap badge design.

Also there's a second pattern Essex National Reserve II enamelled badge over crossed rifles, don't have a picture of this one but an example sold through Bosleys recently.

Liverpool Volunteer Regt with a NVR centre? Interesting as all of the units using this pattern of badge are part of the Volunteer Force. There was a "National Volunteer Reserve", but to-date not a lot is known about them and it is believed that they were made up the remnants of the old National Reserve, that hadn't been taken into the Supernumary Companies of the Territorial Force, which were then absorbed into the Volunteer Force.

This may be a stupid G&T induced question; but aren't the reserve battalions and the National Reserve different things?

Cheers,

Andy C

Not a stupid question at all - and 'yes' they are different, but the general make up of the Army at the turn of the last Century can be quite confusing.

You had;-
The Regular or 1st Class Reserve - with additional Sections.
The Special Reserve - formerly the old Militia prior to 1908.
The National Reserve & it's three Classes(I, II & III), which took over from the Veteran Reserve, and which was administered by the County Associations, which eventually became 'Supernumary Companies'
The National Volunteer Reserve - possibly remnants of the above, which were absorbed into the Volunteer Force.

Plus, AFAIK, the Special Reserve continued in Ireland and (subsequently) Northern Ireland until 1953. I can't remember why Ireland was treated differently.

In England (from Wikipedia) The Special Reserve reverted to its militia designation in 1921, then to Supplementary Reserve in 1924, though the units were effectively placed in "suspended animation" until disbanded in 1953.
