Grenadier Guards bedplate badge
 

This Grenadier Guards bedplate is missing its badge which appears to have been the same size as the cap badge. I have several lugged Grenadier Guards cap badges and although the lugs are not all the same distance apart, none are the same distance apart as the holes in the plate. Were badges specially made for bed plates or were regular badges adapted for use on bedplates?

It would make sense to use existing cap badges and put the holes in the bedplate to accommodate an exist badge rather than put the holes in the bedplate and alter the badge to fit.

Either way does anyone have a GG cap badge with narrowly spaced lugs that might fit?

The one I have has strip brass lugs fitted to the badge.

So in effect they were making specific badges for the bedplates or at least altering existing badges. Why didn't they simply use cap badges and make the holes to accommodate the lugs, it would have saved a lot of brazing?

What are the measurements please ?

do you mean the distance between the slots in the bed plate? If so it is 16mm. The slots themselves are too small to allow a normal size lug through though.

The bed plate is Victorian as James Harrison served in South Africa during the Boer War.

Nice to see that you've traced the chap. I don't know then with reference the fittings ?
