Wellington East Coast Squadron RNZAC

1 Attachment(s)
Hi All,

Does anyone happen to know when the Wellington East Coast Squadron RNZAC wore their "prancing horse" hat badge?

I'm trying to ascertain when it was worn and also am after one (with pin backs) if anyone has any for sale or trade.

I've also been told that at one time they wore a RNZAC hat badge with their Wellington East Coast Squadron collars so I suspect the hat badge came into being at a later date.

Also does anyone know if the Wellington East Coast Squadron RNZAC ever had a cloth shoulder title?

Regards,

Mick

Hi Mick,

I believe the Wellington East Coast Mounted rifles last wore the horse in the 1950's. They later became the 4th Armoured Regiment.

In 1962 they were absorbed into the regular force and became Queen Alexandra's (Waikato/Wellington East Coast Squadron) generally known as QA (Wai/WEC). At least 1970 the RNZAC badge was worn with horse collars.

RNZAC badge worn on 50mm square as a diamond in rifle green with a Post Office Red(scarlet) patch behind badge in the centre, in memory of 4th Armoured Brigade of WW2 fame.

Shoulder titles were Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps. Bunting Yellow script on Rifle Green background. 4th/7th Dragoons pattern stable belt.

Hi Clay,

Thanks for info. I believe there also exists a horse hat badge (with pins) as the late Shaun Aumua had one in his collection.

Hi Mick,

I think pins came in early 90's. Maybe for Old Comrades Association.

Wouldn't make sense for a unit that wears the RNZAC badge on their berets. Besides, they aren't in the Order of Battle anymore, the new flavour,(Territorial) is the 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles.

NZ re-org after re-org:rolleyes:

I'll keep an eye out.

Mick,

Funny thing about those pins on all of the badges I do have with pins, they are all short. The butterfly clips always pop off the beret. They should be longer like the Aussie ones for the slouch, but in hindsight the longer the pin the more susceptible to breakage. Lugs are superior. The NZ badges worn on the Mounted Rifles slouch hat have screw posts!

Just musing.

What badge does the 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles now wear?

This is the one. This has the screw posts for the slouch hat. The collars are the Kaka bird in facing pairs over the Regimental motto (in Latin. Libertas et Natale Solum meaning Liberty and Homeland).

Mick,

A small picture of a Waikato Trooper wearing as does the QAMR, a small flash worn on left side of slouch hat. Amber diagonally over black. I'm sorry I don't know the exact size but by the looks it's maybe 45mm x 45.Attachment 188327
