I got this badge a little while ago in a trade. I'm very happy with it. It's maker marked Rosenthal Toronto.

Nice badge. And rare. Good to see the mm on the reverse.
What is the history on the Special Service Companies? Weren't they to do guard duties in Cananda? |
Special Service Companies
I have the following note on Special Service companies.
Special Service Coys 1917-20 Thirteen companies formed from B & C medical categories- to guard railways, prisoners of war, large dumps & supply depots. Reading between the lines they must have served overseas, but I don't know for sure. Alan |
It has also been my understanding that all the Special Service Companies were involved in guard duty. I found this on the CEF Study Group regarding this unit. "On 20 April 1918, the regimental title of the 2nd Battalion, 1 Central Ontario Regiment was changed to the 2nd Battalion, The Canadian Garrison Regiment, and it absorbed Number 2 Special Service Company. The new Battalion established its headquarters in the Exhibition Grounds in Toronto and had detachments located at vital points throughout Ontario. On 1 July it took over the duties of the Welland Canal Force which had been disbanded the previous day."
Thanks Bob |
