Very interesting, thanks for the info/link/photo. So it would appear the use of chevrons are particular to Dulwich Hospital.

Can't find any more information or photos of chevrons used in any other hospitals and it looks like the practice was stopped in Dulwich when the new uniforms came in.

The photo I posted showed the nurse with chevrons (old uniform) and the other (new uniform) with 3 stripes on her epaulettes , I know that student nurses wore these to indicate what year of training they were in. Doctors/patients could immediately see how experienced a student nurse was.
