At a guess I'd say 3rd Vol. Service Coy, either just prior to departure for SA or just after return.
It has the style of that well known photographer, J.H.Willmott of 64 Manor Street, Cardiff.
Only a rough guess of course.

Jonathan,

My copy has the info on it and the photographer's details on the back.

I'll see if I can find out when they were at Manor St.

Hwyl,

Kevin

These men are wearing the little known 'Terai' hat as described in the 1900 dress regulations. The Terai Hat is a type of slouch hat associated with the Gurkha regiments of the British Army and Indian Army (formerly the British Indian Army) and is still worn by the Ghurkhas.

Although known initially as the Terai hat in the 1900 Officers Dress Regulations, it soon after became general issue for other ranks field dress until the service dress cap was issued in 1905. It did not appear on clothing ledgers under that nomenclature. It was often referred to as a 'slouch hat'. It's slang name was a 'wideawake'.

Going to throw in my suggestion here and say that, they may actually be 'Mounted Infantry Company' of the Welsh Regt and I'm saying this mainly because of the number of period photo's I have seen, where the 'slouch' hat is more often worn by the M.I..

In general the khaki F.S.H. was worn by the 'footslogger' and this would have included the V.S.Companies attached to regular Battalions.
