Hi James,

What you have here looks to be a 2 part mock up. The white metal skull and bones is a "Motto" as worn by the 17th Lancers and subsequently by the 17th/21st Lancers and the Queens Royal Lancers, the Motto as currently worn by the Royal Lancers is slightly different in design and in particular the placement of the bones behind the skull as distinct from the bones being below the jaw as seen in your illustration.

This is always referred to as a Motto and not as a badge. The cap Motto was introduced circa 1896 but was NEVER worn on a backing plate or any form of helmet plate as shown in your illustration. The Motto was of course worn as part of the over all design of a Czapka (Lance cap) plate, however this is a large triangular plate that is worn on the Czapka only.

Also the Arm Motto or Chadd was introduced circa 1856 and whilst it has a skull and crossed bones and the Motto, Or Glory it is taller than it is wide and the design is slightly different.

There was a thread a few weeks back Re 17th/21st Lancers band Czapka plates which is worth a look.

However what you have is a made up fake, but it appears to use a genuine Motto, the earliest Mottoes have 2 lugs and the later, post circa 1906 Mottoes have a slider.

I hope that this helps.

Regards

Phil.

Its all fake, the backing star with QVC is a fake Civilian military type bandsmans cap badge, not even worth faking I wouldnt have thought??

Hi Phil,

Thank you very much, I wonder if the others on the board are also Fakes. They have been in a box in my Garage, but thought it was time to have a clear out. The other's are Canadian.

Regards

James

I think that it is a steampunk fashion item.

I will admit to having created a version of the 17/21st motto on a backing plate for somebody's steam punk outfit. But in card, so only the silhouette was the same. Mea Culpa.

I don't think for a moment that this is genuine but I am sure I have seen the backing plate style used with British Legion badges. I think it is copied from those.
Cheers,
Alex
