Bomber or Something Else?

Wearing a King's Own cap badge this Lance Corporal has a brass grenade above his stripe.

Is this in lieu of a cloth Bomber's grenade?

Yes, it was also worn as cloth. Similarly for a Trench Mortar Bomber often pained blue.

I have a WW1 picture of a brass grenade being worn by an infantry soldier on his lower left sleeve

Mark,

You have previously mentioned this on the GWF and others also had such photos where it was worn above the marksmans crossed rifles badges.

Although unofficial I am of the opinion that it was worn by some who were qualified rifle grenade bombers.

Simon,

I think that's a valid assumption given the importance of rifle grenade section in the platoon construct in the latter part of the war.
