WW1 Australian Machine Gun Companies

1 Attachment(s)
The attached felt badges are those worn by 6th Machine Gun Company AIF from 1916. Can anyone kindly advise if the yellow felt version of the crossed machine guns was replaced by the metal version during the war?

The twenty Machine Gun Companies were reorganised into five Battalions in 1918 and I believe that members of the new Battalions continued to wear the yellow felt version. This might suggest that the metal version was never adopted by Australian units but I would welcome any advice/

Many thanks

Nick

Hi Nick,

Metal guns were not worn officially - the yellow cloth guns were the authorised badge of the Aust MGC and were sometimes not worn, especially when the MG battalion patches were introduced.

It is possible metal guns might have been worn by individuals on best service dress on leave and I have a photo where small metal crossed MGs appear to have been worn on the shoulder straps.

Hi Keith.

Many thanks. I have seen photos where some officers appear to be wearing the metal version on their lapels - as in this AWM photo of 12 MGC. First officer front left and the two officers rear right.

Yes, that's collar badges, I thought you were talking about colour patches/arm badges.

There are photos of crossed MG with figure '2' worn as collar badges, I think this appears in one of JK Cossum's books but I don't have them to hand.

G'day Keith

Ive got the Cossums sitting right here.

In Part 2, 1900 to 1930 on page 55 at the top right, No 182 shows 2nd. Machine Gun Company A.I.F. A combined Rising Sun over crossed machine guns over the number 2.
They are described as Hat/collar badges, 35mm. brass or oxidised, collar badges are identical. And then valued at $80.00 each.

I hope that this helps

Regards

Phil.

That's it, thanks Phil. Peter Coleman used to have a photo of a group of blokes wearing it, I think I have a copy of it floating around somewhere.

I have a GM crossed MG badge, 35mm wide, which appears to have had something (a crown?) clipped from the upper quadrant. I've long suspected that it was used as a metal substitute for the yellow cloth crossed guns, but haven't been able to substantiate it so far.

Thanks Rob.

Yes - all original pieces. Tribute to my wife's great uncle Henry (Harry) Wood originally with 22nd Btn and then 6th Machine Gun Company AIF. Killed at First Bullecourt and like so many has no known grave.

The 2nd MG badge was an unofficial collar badge. I would suggest that they were the only Australian MG Company to get any badges made.

I really love having old guns and collecting them. My grandfather and my father had a lot of old guns and after my grandpa died all of the guns became mine. My father and I still add to collection and it is getting bigger. It is good having them, but most of them are not usable and that is a bad thing. I don't want to spend too much money on restoring them so I leave them as they are. I do have one old remington rifle that still works and I combined it with a new hunting scope from ATN. It is my favorite hunting setup and I still make a lot of shots with it.
