uv black light torch to identify modern cloth

Has any member bought or had experience of a UV black light torch to identify modern cloth from old. There is one for sale on E Bay under number 260274158450. Comments please before I invest a fiver or waste my money. Thanks folks.

I have one but use it for stamps BUT, it also shows up badges and cloth badges in an "interesting" way. For a fiver, its worth it. Whats that these days, 2 Starbucks Xmas coffees - although I might be a bit out of touch with UK prices.

Not sure how practical this is, but for the price, as wrigth241 mentions, you can't go wrong.
Just a caution. Many recent cloth counterfeits are made in non-glow material, and don't show up under black light.

A UV light or Black light, is simply a tool. As Bill stated, many counterfeit cloth items are being produced that do not glow under a UV light. That being said. I am a mechanic, I specialize in automotive AC and Heating systems. I have a very good UV light at my disposal.

In regards to a put together tunic, it helps a lot. BUT it as I stated its just a tool, Hands on and research is still needed to avoid being stung so hard.

Thank you all for your input. I will give it a spin and see how I get on. Starbucks is over rated, I prefer a good pint of Scrumpy!

I can't see a UV light at that price being a bad thing. Mine is over $250.00 CDN, However, as stated, its mainly used at work. Having a use for it outside work is just a bonus.

In regards to Starbucks.... YUK. it took 15 minutes for my wife to get her order last time we were there, 5 coffees (although mine was the only non-specialty one) the bill IIRC was upwards of $14.00.

So my thinking is $14.00 for a crappy coffee, and 15 minutes is just stupid. I can get a pizza for that money and only 5 minutes longer to wait.

Give me my Timmies any day.

Good reference books, websites such as this and experience will tell you more than a black light.
Many fakes are all cotton, plus I've been told that modern detergents will make an old badge glow.
